The Book of Rannells: Big Mouth: Season 1, Episode 10 – “The Pornscape” (2017)

The season finale isn’t one of my favorites.  It’s certainly climactic (cymbal crash) and it has some funny lines, but it isn’t as wildly funny and doesn’t have the strong heart of some of the season’s best episodes.  Just “pretty good,” I’d say, which isn’t up to this show’s usual standard.

Nick and Andrew watch their first porn together.  Nick hopes that it’s “knocked something loose, manhood-wise” and he’ll finally get rolling on puberty, while Andrew begins to use it as an escape for his problems.  Soon, Andrew is online all the time, getting deeper and deeper into what the Hormone Monster dubs “the Pornscape.”  In other news, Jessi deals with the fallout from the last episode, and a field trip to the police station leads to a subplot about a murder investigation.

The main plot is the least interesting to me, although I do like the goofy Sylvester Stallone impression we get in The Italian Stallion, the porn film that Nick and Andrew watch, and the Hormone Monster takes a predictably-funny turn after accidentally punching a hole in the wall (“and the only downside is the dick splinters!”)  The storyline goes to some crazy places, but it’s not as much of the outlandish craziness about the show that I love.  I dunno – I can’t quite place why, but this plot just isn’t as interesting to me.

However, I like the Jessi stuff a lot better.  I also kind of love the subplot with the detectives – it feels a bit like a BoJack Horseman tangent, especially given their preoccupation with coming up with the right moniker for the killer over actually tracking him down.  Plus, DeVon reflexively putting his hands up at the police station “because, ya know,” is spot on.

Still, it’s not my favorite, and it doesn’t have much Andrew Rannells in it, either.  Not that that’s a dealbreaker, because Matthew factors so little into most episodes, and even when he only shows up briefly, he typically makes the most of his limited time and is still hilarious.  This time around, we only see him at the police station, where he enjoys messing with chaperone Coach Steve – his derisive deadpan of “that’s a window, you orangutan” is terrific.
