Kind of a chaotic episode, heavy on the juvenile humor, but still entertaining. We’re in the second half of season 2 now, and while you can see the different threads that are starting to come together, the show makes time for fun as well.
When Krel realized he wasn’t going to be able to repair Mother to the point that she could fly back to Akiridion-5, he switched tactics, and he’s spent a good chunk of the season building a device to create a wormhole between the two planets. Unfortunately, Luug eats it—now every time he farts, he disappears in a stinky purple cloud and reappears somewhere around town. With Krel back at the Mothership running point, Aja tries to catch Luug before Arcadia Oaks is terrorized by the sight of an alien dog.
Our character of the day is Douxie, voiced by Colin O’Donoghue (a.k.a. Hook from Once Upon a Time!) He’s a minor recurring guest star on both this show and the last season of Trollhunters, whetting viewers’ appetite for the next show in the franchise, Wizards. While Aja and Krel’s first appearance on Trollhunters was a veritable backdoor pilot introducing our favorite Akiridions, Douxie only makes the occasional short cameo, just enough to go, “Remember this guy, he’ll be important later.” In this episode, he runs into Aja while she’s looking for Luug and offers to help.
Some fun stuff all around. We have Varvatos derisively calling Luug a “bag of flatulence,” and house music is instrumental in starting a revolution. Toby’s casting session for minor roles in his movie is just what you’d expect, a bunch of comical appearances from recurring characters showing off their acting “chops.” This montage, though, features the awesome revelation that Steve is an incredible actor. Even better? The monologue he performs is clearly a wink at Steven Yeun’s time on The Walking Dead: “Don’t call them zombies! Those were our family. They were dead, but they’re walking now.”
When it comes to the main plot, yes, it’s about an alien dog who teleports every time he farts. It’s silly and a little gross, and it’s a reminder that, while plenty of adults are into it, this franchise was made with children in mind. Still, our heroes have spent a lot of time this season worrying about Morando or Area 49B. Sometimes, it’s nice to take a break from that and just chase a farting dog around town.
Not that Krel does the chasing. Like I said, he takes the Guy in the Chair role, directing Aja over comms as she repeatedly attempts to catch Luug before he disappears again. When Luug first eats the wormhole device and teleports away, Krel gasps, “Our prototype is gone!” Annoyed, Aja chastises, “Our dog is gone, you gloober!” And as Luug teleports to the school and immediately heads into the bathroom for a drink, we get this awesome back-and-forth between Krel and Aja:
KREL: “Ugh! Aja, please, how do you kiss this dog’s mouth?”
AJA: “Dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’!”
KREL: “Really? Does Steve drink out of a toilet?”
AJA: “I will ask him.”
We also get a good dose of Arrogant Krel in this episode, which is possibly my favorite Krel; Diego Luna always kills it on these lines. As he records his first test of the wormhole device, Krel is very impressed with himself, forcing Varvatos to give him some musical accompaniment on his boombox (“You promised!”) and declaring, “And the award for brilliant engineer goes to me, Krel Tarron!” Later, when he comes up with a plan that could help them retrieve Luug, Aja tells him, “You might just be a genius after all!”, and I love Krel’s scandalized reply of, “‘Might’?” It’s too funny—never change, Krel.
