*Spoilers for episode 2*
Oh man, oh man. And just like that, we’re a quarter of the way through the season :sobs: Does it ever drive you crazy, just how fast the night changes? Some major stuff goes down here, and I can’t believe that the next time we see these characters, a year will have gone by for them! So stressed but so hyped. Also, thank goodness for the DJ droid at the wedding and B2EMO playing with some kids, because this is a heavy episode!
Cassian has escaped with the stolen Imperial ship, awaiting instructions for his next move. But his friends from Ferrix are in danger as the circle begins to close around them. Leida’s wedding arrives at the point of no return, all while Mon Mothma and Luthen have differing ideas about how to address their problem with Tay. Syril and Dedra, who are now a couple, face one of their most formidable opponents yet: Syril’s mom.
We got the Dedra/Syril reveal in episode 2, which was wild. It’s so weird to see them doing domestic stuff preparing for Eedy’s visit, including Dedra weighing outfit choices and Syril chopping vegetables like a man possessed. As expected, this storyline gives us the intense discomfort of Eedy’s passive-aggressive parenting, but it also gives us Dedra backstory(!) and a satisfying confrontation.
I love seeing how things come to a head at the wedding. Mon and Leida’s scene together before the ceremony is excellent, and the Mon-Luthen stuff is really good. All along, these two have been working toward the same aim with very different philosophies/temperaments—Mon is forced to reckon with just how far Luthen will go to protect the Rebellion. Everything culminates in the fantastic final scenes.
The Ferrix crew’s situation has gone from concerning to urgent. For the sake of spoilers, I don’t want to get into the details. But we get intense action, painful decisions, and a climactic showdown. This is probably the storyline I most wish we were able to see the immediate fallout of.
The first half of the episode is pretty lite on Cassian again, but he makes a bigger showing in the second half. We get to see his first interactions with Kleya, which I love. I enjoy that trying to pilot the TIE fighter is still kind of a shambles for him, with comedic levels of mess clashing against his more competent air.
I like that Cassian is devoted to the Rebellion at this point, but he’s not a loyal stooge. He’s pissed at Kleya, knowing that the mission (and his life!) was jeopardized because of bad intel, and he’s fed up about it. And we see how his first priority remains to his loved ones.
Diego Luna is just amazing in this role. I don’t think I’ll ever stop being impressed! His non-verbal acting continues to be off-the-charts—in an outstanding episode, the most compelling moment for me is the final shot of his face as he takes in the events that have just occurred. What a character, what a performance, what a show!
