News Satire Roundup: September 1st, September 3rd-5th

Sunday, September 1 – Interesting piece today on Canada. Hasan examined its reputation as a progressive country (and Justin Trudeau as a progressive prime minister) – welcoming/inclusive to refugees and immigrants, dedicated to renewable energy and climate-friendly policies – and then dove into the more complex reality of how Canada really addresses those issues. For instance, he looked at Quebec’s move to ban public employees (such as teachers) from wearing religious headcoverings, and he questioned how creating a new pipeline is supposed to help fight climate change. Throughout, he aired clips from his interview with Trudeau. As Hasan pointed out, this was a story his audience most likely didn’t want to hear (he likened it to an exposé on Tom Hanks,) but that’s why it needed to be said. Also, I adored his description of Canada’s reputation: “it’s like if the Green New Deal had piercing blue eyes and listened to your poetry.”

Tuesday, September 3 – We opened on the Pope getting stuck in an elevator (“Where’s your god now??”), Hong Kong’s protests, and a viral video of a bar being robbed. Next was Hurricane Dorian. We covered Trump’s continual surprise at the very existence of Category 5 hurricanes, his alleged plan to “disrupt” it by nuking it, playing golf while “monitoring the storm,” and the National Weather Service reassuring Alabama that they weren’t in Dorian’s path (loved the point about how often government agencies instruct us not to listen to the president.) As Trevor noted, given his complete ignorance on the subject, Trump not paying attention is probably for the best. Roy was supposed to discuss stories that happened while the show was on hiatus, but only one was on his mind – the furor over Popeye’s new chicken sandwich. Actor Shameik Moore was the guest, discussing the flow of his career and his new project on the Wu Tang Clan.

Wednesday, September 4 – After looking at the chaos in Parliament (with Brexit taking out its third prime minister,) we moved onto what may be the first incident of “space crime” and Trump drawing on a hurricane-trajectory map with a Sharpie rather than admit he was wrong about Dorian heading toward Alabama. The most recent mass shooting meant a new piece on gun control (or lack thereof.) Jaboukie offered up his (surprisingly-practical) plan: turning straight guys away from guns by making them “gay.” Some updates on the 2020 race. Most noteworthy was the Joe Biden stuff, highlighting his latest gaffes and his wife’s less-than-ringing endorsement of “you might like someone else better, but just grit your teeth and do it” – I loved Trevor’s impression of how Trump plays off his own memory lapses in ways that Biden doesn’t. Guest Bill Hader talked about IT Chapter Two and work he’s done to help destigmatize anxiety.

Thursday, September 5 – First up was Trump using funding from military projects to help fund the wall, Super Mario joining English school curriculum, and an unfortunately-shaped German amusement park ride. The big story of the night was the fires in the Amazon rain forest. As infuriating as President Bolsanaro is, I loved Trevor’s impression of his bizarre “You want to ‘save the rain forest’? What’s your angle?” reaction to other countries trying to offer aid. Presidential candidate Steve Bullock was the first of two guests. While he seems like a fine enough politician, his president-or-bust aversion to running for the Senate was very uninspiring. The second guest, Tracee Ellis Ross teased the new Black-ish spin-off Mixed-ish, talked about her own experiences growing up mixed, and promoted her new line of products for textured hair (loved Trevor sharing his tragic tale of misguidedly using hotel shampoo.)
